In Which We Encounter The Bear

(written September 18, 2008)

There is a bear in the woods but he does not know we are here, which is why we are able to take his photograph and not have to run the hell the other way.  The wind is blowing in the correct direction, which is to say towards us and not towards the bear.  And so today on my 51st birthday I get to live for yet another day.  It is a good day to be alive.

Debra and I stood and watched the bear for a few minutes and then we decided to turn around and go back the way we came.  The bear does not care that we are here but apparently the deer we later run into have an issue to pick with us.

It’s hard to blame them, we were the only humans around and you know how humans tend to screw up a nice habitat.  Still I’m pretty sure if they got to know us they’d lose the attitude and understand we’re a couple of the good guys.

I hear on the radio that the stock market is cratering and the economy is falling apart.  No one here in the woods seems to care much…

The interest rates here are long term…

We hiked around Crescent Meadow in the Giant Forest area and there was no sign of panic in the air there either…

Moro Rock allows you to get over 6000 feet above sea level and climbing the over 300 steps takes you to the top… No matter where the market closes.

From the top of the rock the views were spectacular…

We hiked many miles and many steps over the last two days and it’s been the ideal way to celebrate both my greenius and my superb conditioning after five decades.

If I’m going to have to become a modern day Joad family member in whatever new depression is on the way I’m physically ready.
